The 12-Step Program: Community, Accountability, and a Path Forward

The 12-Step model has helped millions of people achieve and sustain sobriety over the past eight decades. At Sunflower Recovery Center, we incorporate 12-Step principles as a core part of our programming — not because we believe it’s the only path to recovery, but because for many people, it’s a deeply meaningful one. 


The 12 Steps provide structure, honesty, and a sense of connection — three things that are often missing when someone is in the grip of addiction. Working the steps with a sponsor and a community of peers creates accountability that extends well beyond the walls of treatment, giving clients a support network they can lean on for life.

Strong Aftercare & Alumni Support

During treatment, clients participate in facilitated 12-Step groups, Big Book study, and step work guided by trained counselors. We also connect clients with local AA and NA meetings — both on and off campus — so they begin building a community-based support network before they ever leave our facility.

Because recovery doesn’t end at discharge, the 12-Step community becomes an important part of our aftercare planning. When clients leave Sunflower, they leave with meeting schedules, sponsor connections, and the tools to keep working their program wherever life takes them next.

Not the Only Path — But a Powerful One

We believe recovery is personal. The 12-Step model is one of several evidence-informed approaches woven into treatment at Sunflower — alongside CBT, DBT, trauma therapies, MAT, and more. What levels of care does Sunflower Recovery Center offer?
We offer Residential Treatment (RTC), Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), along with Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) and Dual Diagnosis care. Our Kansas City rehab admissions team will help determine which level of care is the right fit for your situation.
That depends on a number of factors: the severity of your substance use, whether there are co-occurring mental health concerns, your home environment, and your prior treatment history. Our Kansas City rehab admissions team will conduct a thorough assessment and make a recommendation based on what’s clinically appropriate for you — not a one-size-fits-all answer.
